R.I.P. Emitt Rhodes

Posted: July 20th, 2020 | Author: | Filed under: post | Comments Off on R.I.P. Emitt Rhodes

I was just reached by the news that the amazing Emitt Rhodes has passed away at the age of 70.  Very saddening news!

Some of you who’s reading this (being devoted fans of the genre called power-pop and/or any kind of post-Beatles pop) probably know very well who this is. He must certainly be said to be somewhat of a giant in those circuits. Or at least a very beloved “cult hero”. Others might not have a clue who he is. There was a time when I didn’t either (see below).

My old band The Merrymakers once recorded a version of my favourite song of his on which I am singing lead vocals. “Somebody Made For Me”. It’s on Spotify here. There’s also a fan-made little YouTube clip featuring a couple of pictures from our basic tracks sessions at the EMI Studio in Sweden:

Only a few months ago I got the question why we chose this particular song from Sony Music Japan (in conjunction with the release of The Best of The Merrymakers) that explains how I/we discovered his music (back in 1997). This was my reply:

That is a special memory It was after it was decided that we were going to work with Andy Sturmer (ex-Jellyfish) that we went to see him at his house in Oakland. It was a surreal experience to begin with for us to go home to our big hero and idol. We were so incredibly nervous. But excited of course! He asked us if we were beer-drinkers and we said a big collective “YES”!  So we sat down in his living room with our beers and started to talk music. Andy loved what we were doing so that was fantastic. He was about to go through our songs with us and discuss them individually to prepare for his upcoming visit to Sweden. But he also started to suggest some cover songs going through his fantastic record collection. He had two songs in mind. One that he picked out was an old ELO song that we hadn’t heard. “Julie don’t live here anymore”. I fell in love with it and we kept playing it on the rest of our California trip in our rental car. I have very strong memories of that. But the other song that he suggested was almost too good to be true. It was “Somebody made for me” by Emitt Rhodes.
I couldn’t believe my ears! It sounded so close to Paul McCartney! Unbeliavable! It was such a wonderful piece of pop music. And we hadn’t heard about the guy before. Such a treasure!

And we decided to record that song. And we also laid down some basic tracks for it during the Bubblegun recording. But Anders [Hellgren] was skeptical. He thought our version went too slow. He heard something else in his head and didn’t think it was worth finishing. And so we didn’t. It wasn’t until a couple of years later when Bubblegun was going to come out in Australia and they wanted a bonus track that I convinced Anders that we should finish the recording. So we did. I sang a lead vocal and Anders did some beautiful backing vocals. I think it turned out quite nicely! But in answer to your question – it was totally Andy’s idea from the beginning!

Since the 90’s I have never forgotten about Emitt Rhodes. I have kept his music close to my heart. And to be aware of his music has always felt like some kind of hidden treasure. In a parallell world his music should of course have reached so many more ears. I would recommend anyone to try to get hold of his wonderful debut album Emitt Rhodes (from the fantastic year 1970!) which is the one I’ve been listening to so many times without ever growing tired of it.

There was a documentary made about him that I tried to get hold of for years, that sometimes can be found on YouTube or Vimeo called “The One Man Beatles” which tells quite a lot about his story. Here’s a current link to Vimeo that may or may not last (so hurry up!):

This film, however, was shot before my good (and extremely talented) musician friend (and Melody and Madness tour mate) Chris Price did the wonderful album “Rainbow Ends” with Emitt. As such it’s a bit incomplete. But still a great watch obviously!

Chris Price himself just wrote the following on his Facebook:

“I am still processing the news that Emitt is gone. He was a colossal talent, a certified genius and he was my friend. When I was a teenager I listened to his records religiously, not knowing how fundamentally important he would become to my life beyond just those incredible albums. I learned a lot being around him; about life, music and even a bit of quantum physics. To those of you who only knew him through the music, I intend to keep his memory alive and well and continue to share his work with everyone I come into contact with, and I encourage you to do the same. To those that I know and love, who knew and loved him, I am thinking of you and I hope we all see each other soon and share the more personal memories. RIP Emitt Rhodes, you will be deeply missed.”

Chris Price with Emitt Rhodes

When I came over to Los Angeles back in 2018 for the Melody and Madness tour  (see “my” part of our joint show in LA here) Chris picked me up at LAX. He actually had planned a bit of a surprise for me for the lunch we were going to have. He actually had called to see if Emitt would like to join for this lunch (knowing what a fan I was…). However, it turned out that Emitt had a short answer to the guy (Jim) who shared house with him, and who had picked up the phone (since Emitt usually didn’t). He replied: “–I’ve already eaten!”. So that was the end of that. But I am forever thankful to Chris for the “almost met Emitt” experience. I am also very grateful for the first-hand account from Chris in the car on the tour about how he managed to make Emitt record again. With a little help from some friends like Roger Joseph Manning, Jr., Jason Falkner, Aimee Mann, Jon Brion, Susanna Hoffs, Nels Cline, Pat Sansone, Taylor Locke, Fernando Perdomo, Joe Seiders, Bleu, Probyn Gregory and Nelson Bragg.

Thank you so much for the music Emitt Rhodes! And thank you Andy Sturmer for introducing me to his music. And thank you Chris Price for bringing Emitt back to music. His music will remain in my heart as long as I live.

David Myhr playing Side B of The Beatles Revolver (acoustic live)

Posted: July 4th, 2020 | Author: | Filed under: post | Comments Off on David Myhr playing Side B of The Beatles Revolver (acoustic live)

In August 2013 I did my first live internet streaming concert. (See teaser post with trailer).

I was sitting in a corner of my Stockholm studio with a guitar and a piano and performed the entire B-side of The Beatles “Revolver” album. If you missed it then, here’s your new chance in the era of Corona.

The whole thing was part of a series of concerts and the initiative came from my amazingly talented artist colleague Mike Viola who wrote:
“An act of randomness and pure cruelty. Fans of Mike Viola signed up to have their names pulled out of a hat and assigned to cover and perform live an entire Beatles album side! Some might go deep, some might stay shallow and safe, some might wear uniforms, some might perform naked (Wedding Album). You have to tune in to find out. This is FOR the fans and BY the fans. It’s gonna be ugly, beautiful, soft and quiet, but above all: it’s gonna be weird!”

Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream!

Thanks to Todd Stanton at  for bringing me in to this project.

Lucky Day release party live video premiere!!!

Posted: June 7th, 2020 | Author: | Filed under: post | Comments Off on Lucky Day release party live video premiere!!!

Phew…! It took a couple of years. But now it’s here!!! The live video from the release party for Lucky Day!

In May 8, 2018, ten days before the release of my second solo album Lucky Day, a release party was held at Bar Brooklyn, Debaser Strand, Stockholm. With a sensational band backing myself up we performed a short set of seven songs from the album for the first time. (Except for the song “Lovebug” that I had previously performed on the Melody and Madness tours in the UK, Spain, and the US).

I hope you enjoy this video! Should you do it to the extent that you would be willing to contribute to my costs for musicians, film team, editors, and mixing, please feel free to make your donations to PayPal [email protected] or (for Swedes) by Swish to 123 546 84 26 (Monogram Recordings). I am not anticipating a full compensation. Not even a fraction. But having said that, any help towards financing this adventure would be highly appreciated. I’d rather spend hard earned money towards a future David Myhr album one of these years. Thank you so much for your support!

(AND, also… just as a hint: A longer ”full scale” concert from Black Box, Studio Acusticum, Piteå, Sweden, from later the same year is to be expected later this year!!!)

Please find links below to the concert both on YouTube and on Facebook. Make sure to figure out how to activate the English sub-titles so you’ll understand the in-between songs talk.

Let’s begin with the Facebook video:

David Myhr 50

Posted: February 27th, 2020 | Author: | Filed under: post | Comments Off on David Myhr 50

You say it’s your birthday? It’s my birthday too, yeah!

It was fifty years ago today!

Yes, it’s true! Believe it or not. Even though I don’t look a day older than 27 I was actually conceived in the “swinging sixties”. Around a month before the moon landning. And I was born around a month before The Beatles split up. (And boy, what a great time it was!).

I was the youngest brother of four and I’m sure none of my beloved elder brothers sang “He ain’t heavy, He’s my brother”. Why not? Because I was indeed heavy. I weighed 5070 gram!

Now, you’re all probably thinking: How can I best celebrate this VERY IMPORTANT EVENT? Well, it’s of course up to you! You might want to check out a bunch of official videos on my YouTube channel (and make my day by sharing your own favorites!). Or make my day by writing a little greeting at my Instagram or artist Facebook page?

Another way to celebrate would be to enjoy the brand new three hour special Spotify playlist called “David Myhr 50”. It consists of 50 David Myhr tracks thoughtfully prepared for the occasion by David Myhr himself. (Yes, that’s me!)

It features songs spanning all over my long and (mostly) winding career both from the 90’s (stuff I recorded with The Merrymakers) and the 10’s (my solo stuff).

Looking forward to new musical adventures in the future! Thank you ever so much for your invaluable support! And thanks for making today a Lucky Day!

Peace & Love!

David Myhr interview with Swedish Radio P4 Gothenburg

Please feel free to enjoy an interview (including an acoustic live performance) with Swedish Radio P4 Gothenburg discussing the release of Lucky Day.

Here’s a link to the video on Facebook:

David Myhr interview and live performance for Swedish Radio P4 Gothenburg

Stefan Livh at P4 Göteborg, Sveriges Radio asks me about both present and past. For instance he asks me about my background in The Merrymakers and our collaboration in the 90s with Jellyfish frontman Andy Sturmer and how he – to our delight – helped us finishing off our song ”April’s Fool”. I explain how big the whole thing was for us and that this event is now part of Brighter Day -A Jellyfish Story I talk about how we later started to write and produce for Japanese artists in our own studio. And the realisation, after The Merrymakers had gone separate ways, that all my songs "suddenly were approved". "By myself!". And how going solo opened up new possibilities including calling whoever I felt like, and recording in Nashville etc. We also talk about my Electric Light Orchestra pastiche ”Spellbound” from the Ulf Malmros and Jaana Fomin movie Flykten till framtiden and why film music composer Jimmy Lagnefors asked me to co-write with him.I get to talk about my general philosophy of recording and in particular about the making of ”The Perfect Place” and how Andreas Quincy Dahlbäck (who I refer to here as my ”George Martin”) helped me out in finding two songs that fitted into one, and how violinist Hanna Ekström had to double herself many times in making the strings sound like a full orchestra. We also discuss the difficulty in finding a balance between ”loss-making” artistic passion projects and my job as a senior lecturer at The School of Music in Piteå, far away from family and home in Stockholm. And how my annoying(?) commercial jingles like Ryds Bilglas and Insplanet are heard by more people than who get to hear my own music, and how they help me out in making ends meet. We also talk about the Lucky Day release party at Bar Brooklyn, Debaser, in Stockholm, and the incredible band I put together for the occasion including Peter Kvint, and Peter Morén from Peter Bjorn and John. The whole thing was done ”live” and was aired on P4 Gothenburg on May 4, 2018.Video edited by Todd Productions, Inc.

(And here’s a link to the video on YouTube where English subtitles available by clicking the subtitles button.)

Swedish Radio P4 had been playing the first single from the album ”Jealous Sun” quite a lot in the previous weeks and at one point the radio personality Stefan Livh at P4 Gothenburg commented upon the song, spontaneously calling me ”The Jeff Lynne of Sweden”. He is a musician himself and it’s obvious that he has a soft spot for classic melodic pop. He invited me to come and sing the song live in the studio.

But there was also time for an conversation where we talk about both present and past. For instance he asks me about my background in The Merrymakers and our collaboration in the 90s with the Jellyfish frontman Andy Sturmer and how he – to our delight – helped us finishing off our song ”April’s Fool”. I explain how big the whole thing was for us and that this event is now part of Brighter Day… A Jellyfish Story (The Jellyfish biography).

I talk about how we later started to write and produce for Japanese artists in our own Monogram Recordings studio. And the realisation, after The Merrymakers had gone separate ways, that all my songs “suddenly were approved”. “By myself!”. ”Every Raindrop Means A Lot” by David Myhr (Tages cover feat. Göran Lagerberg!)

Posted: November 28th, 2019 | Author: | Filed under: post | Comments Off on ”Every Raindrop Means A Lot” by David Myhr (Tages cover feat. Göran Lagerberg!)

Today the Tages tribute album Fuzzy Patterns is released digitally! Check it out on Spotify here or buy it on iTunes here. And guess what, I’m on it!!! (Surprise surprise!?).

Tages, if you ask me (and many others), was the best Swedish pop band in the 60s. When I was invited to participate my first thought was: Hope no one already has taken hold of “Every Raindrop Means A Lot”! It so happens that it’s my absolute favourite song when it comes to Swedish 60’s pop. (No wonder it served as part inspiration for the production of this song that I co-wrote for a movie). The original version came in February 1967 and was featured on Tages’ album Contrast.

The song was still available and I feared doing the mistake of making a bleak “copy” of the song (like I might have done to some extent when I did 10cc’s “The Things We Did For Love”?). I asked Andreas Dahlbäck to produce it knowing he wouldn’t allow that. And I was right. He made a complete re-interpretation of the song for which Hasse Gardemar wrote a beautiful string arrangment.

David Myhr and Göran Lagerberg at the releaseparty for the book “Popåret 1967”.

We soon agreed that the “cherry on the cake” would be to involve the man who sang the chorus on the original recording 52 years ago. None less than legendary former Tages member Göran Lagerberg. Also known for groups like Kebnekajse, Fläsket Brinner and Grymlings. (Not to mention Blond who made this incredible album!). To our great delight Görans said yes!!! So it’s him that we hear on bass on my version. It was a somewhat surreal and very cool feeling to have him in the studio. A memory that certainly will last long!

I’m both excited and proud to be on the album together with so many cool artists and groups. Including my good friend, internationally celebrated rock’n’roll star Peter Morén (of Peter Bjorn and John fame) who by the way recently helped out with great backing vocals and 12-string Rickenbacker on the bonus tracks for the deluxe edition of Lucky Day (including this Aztec Camera cover). And of course Mad Men Band whose line-up features some of the great people (and good friends) with whom I’ve performed Beatles songs many time (like here). But also, Max Lorentz and Ebbot Lundberg (Soundtrack of our lives) and many more. Overall, it’s a great great album, well worth checking out!

Both CD and vinyl versions are to be expected and if you’re interested I would encourage you to follow the updates on the Fuzzy Patterns Facebook page or on this dedicated web page.

Work of Love – digital single and video

Posted: October 20th, 2019 | Author: | Filed under: post | Comments Off on Work of Love – digital single and video

As reported in last week’s blog post the song ”Work of Love”  is part of the soundtrack for the new Swedish comedy Tills Frank skiljer oss åt (Until Frank do us part). Now the single is released on your favourite streaming service (Spotify here, iTunes here). And so is the video! Please enjoy!

The video is made by Petter Boström/Boström Photography and features Per Bergqvist (The Virtues) on guitar, Jonas Thorell on bass, and Stefan Brokvist on drums.

As for the music for Tills Frank skiljer oss åt Jimmy Lagnefors has written the whole soundtrack (out on Spotify now!). On ”Work of Love” he invited me to provide lead vocals. I took the song to my heart and tried to add my stamp by writing a dreamy bridge for it in the grand tradition of Beach Boys and Jellyfish (featuring harmony vocal wizard Christian Phillips from Sonic Executive Sessions on backing vocals). Jimmy Lagnefors and I have previously worked together on songs for movies, including “Vänta inte på mig” (Micke & Veronica, 2014) and “Spellbound” (Flykten till Framtiden, 2016).

Single artwork by Keith Brogdon/Thinking Out Loud Design.

For full musician and producer’s credits see last week’s post.

My brand new song ”Work of Love”  is part of the soundtrack written by film music composer Jimmy Lagnefors for the new comedy Tills Frank skiljer oss åt (Until Frank do us part) that premieres in Swedish movie theatres on October 18. (The same date will also be the official release date worldwide for the digital single).

Lagnefors has written the whole soundtrack (out on Spotify now!). For the 60s flavoured song ”Work of Love” he invited me to provide lead vocals. I took the song to my heart and tried to add my stamp by writing a dreamy bridge for it in the grand tradition of Beach Boys and Jellyfish (the second best band ever you know…!) . Jimmy and I have previously worked together on songs for movies, including “Vänta inte på mig” (Micke & Veronica, 2014) and “Spellbound” (Flykten till Framtiden, 2016). On the new soundtrack I also sing background vocals on the song Vibrations.

The movie is a comedy written by Peter Magnusson, directed by Leif Lindblom, and starring Liv Mjönes, Peter Magnusson, Erik Johansson. “Work of Love” provides the backdrop to a scene that takes in the ski slopes of winter sports resort Åre. See trailer here)

About the movie: ”Vera’s 40th birthday is approaching and she’s tired of being single. She’s desperately in love with her colleague Frank, but her tired life-coach wants her to lower her standards, lock-on a more resonable guy and get on with her life.”

Video for the new radio single “Lovebug” + “Deluxe Edition” of Lucky Day!!!

Posted: April 26th, 2019 | Author: | Filed under: post | Comments Off on Video for the new radio single “Lovebug” + “Deluxe Edition” of Lucky Day!!!

I am very excited today to be able to announce a brand new video for the new radio single ”Lovebug”, taken from the album Lucky Day, co-written with the one and only Linus of Hollywood (during my co-writing trip to the US).  The video by Alexander Edström kicks off with a short glimpse from when Linus and I just had finished writing the song at his home in California. It then invites us in to the actual album recording in Nashville on the day the song was recorded.

We get to see my two amazing co-producers helping me making the track come to life – Brad Jones on upright bass and vibraphone and Andreas Dahlbäck on drums. We also get a quick peek from the drum overdub on the bridge that took place at legendary Stockholm studio Atlantis (where by the way most of ABBA’s hits were recorded!) This is the first time any of this video material is presented publicly to the world. (Previously we’ve just seen short videblogs from the album recording trip).

I’m really proud of this song and I do hope you enjoy it as well as the video! (More on the Deluxe Edition below!).

But as if this wasn’t enough I’m equally excited to announce the news that the “Deluxe Edition” of Lucky Day now is out digitally, on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. This means that not only the lucky owners of the physical CD (which you can also become!) now will be able to enjoy the three cover songs that I was fortunate enough to record with Peter Morén (Peter Bjorn and John) on backing vocals and guitar, Mikaela Hansson on piano, Jerker Odelholm on bass, and Andreas Dahlbäck on drums (as well as Gustav Afsahi on keyboard overdubs). In the video below you will get teasers from all the songs as well as a glimpse from the recording that took place at Durango Recording.

On the release page of my label Lojinx I’m quoted explaining my selection of the 3 cover songs and 4th bonus track:

Military Madness (Graham Nash) – “I love a lot of 60’s music and one of my favourite bands is The Hollies, not least because of Graham Nash’s high harmony vocals. However, I never got to love any particular album as much as I did Graham Nash’s first solo album (Songs for Beginners, 1971). It kind of resonated with me when I discovered it in my 20s and it’s been in my top 10 albums list ever since.

My Messed Up Friend (Brad Jones) – “The idea came up to surprise Brad – the co-producer of the album – as I’ve been an admirer of his production work for a long time. His only solo album Gilt-Flake is an album worth discovering. My Messed Up Friend is a song that means a lot to my wife and I and is a really touching song that’s musically interesting too.

Somewhere In My Heart (Aztec Camera) – “I don’t have a big reason for picking this song other than it’s one of the few of it’s era that I fell in love with just by hearing it on the radio. I felt a real connection with the song and it’s 60’s roots wrapped in modern production. It somehow felt like a secret love, my discovery, despite being a massive international hit! Some songs can have that effect on you, a kind of special relationship.

Spellbound– A song co-written with Jimmy Lagnefors for Swedish film Flykten till Framtiden (“My Future Love”). – “The director had specifically requested a song that ‘sounds like Electric Light Orchestra’ and Jimmy asked me to collaborate. As a huge admirer of Jeff Lynne’s songwriting and production I obviously jumped at the chance. Somehow we managed to create ‘the song that E.L.O. never made’. It was played a lot on Swedish radio, people really liked it, and I’ve come to realize that it actually kind of works really well as a song on its own merits. I’ve grown really proud of it. It kind of seemed too good to not have on the album!”

All 4 bonus tracks are now available to all on the “Deluxe Edition” release of Lucky Day, out now on all good digital platforms.
